శరశరసమరైకసూర

శరశరసమరైకశూర - SaraSarasamaraika Soora

(raagam: kuntalavaraali, taaLam: aadi)

pallavi - Sara Sara samaraikaSoora,| Saradhimadavidaara
anupallavi - suraripubala manu toola|girula kanala samamau Sree Rama
caraNam - tolijEsina paapavanakuThaara, maa|kalanaina sEyagalEni
baluvilunu virici velasina Sree Raghu|kulavara brOvumu, tyaagaraajanuta

1) Sara Sara samaraikaSoora,| Saradhimadavidaara
Sara - blade of grass (darbha)
Sara - arrow
samaraikasoora - warrior nonpareil
saradhimadavidaara - destroyer of samudra's pride/arrogance
Meaning: Rama, the destroyer of samudra's arrogance, you're like no other warrior the world knows. No other warrior can use a blade of grass as an arrow.

2) suraripubala manu toola|girula kanala samamau Sree Rama
i) sura-ripu-balamu + anu = sura-ripu-bala manu.
sura are gods
ripu is an enemy, so a suraripu is a raakshasa.
balamu is strength, anu is named
ii) toola-girulaku + anala = toola-girula-kanala (ukaarasandhi! ఉకారసంధి)
toola is cotton
girulu are mountains. girulaku is 'for mountains'
anala is fire
samamau is equivalence
Meaning: If the strength of demons is a mountain, when faced by your ferocious valor that is akin to fiery fire , it is like a cotton mountain.

3) tolijEsina paapavanakuThaara
toli is previously
cEsina is done
paapavana is sins comparable to a forest
kuThaara is an axe. A point to note is that kuThaara here is not a word by itself but relies on the earlier phrase 'paapavana'.
Meaning: If our sins were a forest, you'd be a hatchet. (Note: After kuThaara there should be small pause or break, it should not be sung as kuThaaramaa. As my dear friend Raaghava pointed out to me, that would be equivalent to choosing neutral gender similie for masculine gender. Secondly, it also leaves the next sentence in the song incomplete.)

4) maa|kalanaina sEyagalEni,
baluvilunu virici velasina Sree Raghu|kulavara brOvumu
maa kalanaina is even in our dreams
sEyagalEni is impossible
balu+vilunu is a huge bow (whcih is Siva-dhanussu)
virici is break
velasina is born
Sree Raghu+kula+vara is the exemplary one in Raghu's lineage
Meaning: Rama, the finest in Raghu's vamsa, you did something mere mortals cannot even begin to dream doing, you broke Siva's famed bow.

This kRti as with many others composed by The Great Saint has the familiar word play. A few to note are
1) Usage of Sara twice in the first line with different connotations
2) Usage of praasa - matching consonants in a pair of lines
SaraSara and Saradhi in the first line
suraripu and girulaku in the second line
toli and kala in the first line of caraNam
bala and kula in the second line of caraNam
Above all, this is a great kRti that pulls the listener into its inherent rhythm right from the start.

నగుమోము గనలేని - nagumOmu ganalEni

nagumOmu ganalEni is an immensely popular kRti composed by SrI tyAgarAja swami in abheri rAgam beseeching his beloved Rama to show his smiling countenance.

He sings thus;

O Raghuvara Sri Rama, can you not save me from my pitiable state of not having seen your smiling countenance?

O The One that lifted govarthanagiri, do not your near and dear ones tell you the right thing to do? Even if they do not – can you not save me from my pitiable state of not having seen your smiling countenance?

Did garutmanta not make haste after hearing your command? Or did he say that the skies are too far away from the earth? O lord of the worlds, if you forsake me who can I turn to? I cannot bear the thought that you are vexed with me; can you not save me from my pitiable state of not having seen your smiling countenance?

In his kRtis Tyagaraja uses epithets of Lord Vishnu for Rama. That explains why he calls Rama, naga-rAja-dhara, an epithet Lord Krishna earned after lifting govarthanagiri. Here he also employs another technique of asking rhetorical questions to underscore his amazement that The God has not yet shown himself.

The first one is whether his retinue, the near and dear ones do not guide him the right way. Everyone knows that the Lord does not require any help much less guidance from his family when helping his bhaktakoTi. The second one is whether garutmanta does not abide by his master’s bidding and complains that the earth is too far from the Lord’s abode. gartumanta can neither go against his master’s wishes nor can his supremely potent strength find the distance between skies and earth non-negotiable. The point in the above questions is to bring across tyagaraya’s wonderment that Lord Rama has not yet manifested himself.

The beauty of the kRti is further enhanced by the praasa employed. In Telugu prosody, antyaanupraasa (literally rhyme-at-the-end) is just one of the many ways to add beauty to verses. In this case you will notice that the second letter of the first word in each line is ‘ga’ or its variant and that adds lyrical beauty to the rendition. The words are nagu, naga, ogi, khaga, gaganamu, jagamu, vaga.

Here is the complete sahityam with meanings for the phrases that make up the kRti.
